9. Wolf Creek Ski Area, Colorado

One of the smaller and lesser-known gems of Colorado is Wolf Creek Ski Area.  Just because this resort is small, doesn’t mean it can't compare to larger Colorado counterparts.  Quietly nestled in remote southwestern Colorado, Wolf Creek consistently offers the highest natural snowfall in the state, along with a quiet and intimate setting that is rarely crowded.

Fun For Kids

Terrain-wise, Wolf Creek offers everything from the mellowest bunny hill runs to the hardest moguled steeps.  It's a great opportunity for kids of all skill levels because Wolf Creek’s ski school offers child lessons for both beginners and more advanced.

Family Skiing

Although this mountain isn’t as easy to commute to as some of the resorts on the front range, the extra travel time pays dividends in fewer crowds and shorter lift lines. The 10 lifts that span Wolf Creek provide families with an experience that feels much more expansive than the existing 1600 acres.

Off The Slopes

If you want a change of scene from the main mountain, then be sure to check out Wolf Creek’s cross-country skiing options.  There are two nordic tracks, totaling over 6 miles of groomed trails which will keep the family busy all day with beautiful views around the San Juan and Rio Grande National Forests.

What We Love About Wolf Creek Ski Area

  •  Consistently receives more snow annually than any other Colorado resort
  • One of Colorado’s most economical family skiing options

Two of Snow King’s most coveted attractions are its Alpine Slide and Cowboy Coaster, both of which are family-friendly activities that will get your adrenaline pumping.  If coasters aren’t your thing, be sure to check out the multiple tubing options that Snow King has to offer.

Snow King’s Alpine Slide consists of a track, a half mile long with a vertical drop of 350 feet. Riders will take in the picturesque landscape as they reach speeds of 25mph during their descent.  The Cowboy Coaster is a high-speed version of the Alpine Slide, where riders descend over 480 feet down the mountain while taking in the beautiful views of the resort.

Family Skiing

One of the drawbacks of skiing at nearby Jackson Hole is its popularity which draws massive crowds, especially during the holiday season. Luckily Snow King manages to remain largely uncrowded for most of the season.  It is a great family option when you combine this lack of crowds with inexpensive lift tickets and ample beginner terrain.

Off The Slopes

Jackson Hole Mountain Resort is one of the most revered gems of the Rocky Mountain range.  It is famous for its more advanced terrain, like the world-renowned Corbett’s Couloir, but it also offers plenty of beginner and intermediate terrain that the whole family can enjoy.

Jackson Hole has a reputation for snowfall, with a yearly average of 459 inches, especially during spring.  It makes a great option for a family skiing trip in both early and late season.

Fun For Kids

For those with less experience, including younger ones, Jackson Hole’s Mountain Sports School offers one of the most comprehensive ski school operations in the country.  They offer both private and group lessons for all age groups, which can be a great option if your family’s skills differ greatly.

Jackson Hole also offers a nordic track (for cross country skiing), an ice skating rink, tubing, and opportunities for spotting wildlife. Jackson hole parlay gets its reputation from the sheer variety of activities on offer.

Family Skiing

What makes Jackson Hole such a great fit for families, especially those who are new to skiing, is how the mountain is separated into different areas based on terrain difficulty.  Most of the lifts only serve one type of terrain, so there's no need to worry about accidentally finding yourself at the top of a black diamond run, as the only way down.

Jackson Hole has no shortage of high-speed quad chairs and gondolas, which takes the headache out of keeping track of the entire family on a busy day.  You can even purchase cheaper lift tickets if you plan on sticking to the beginner lifts for the day.

Off The Slopes

If you are looking to take a day off of the mountain and explore what Jackson Hole has to offer, look no further because one of the best National Parks is right around the corner!  Yellowstone National Park and Bridger-Teton National Forest are just 70 miles north of Teton Village, making them a viable option for a day trip.
